Ten Ways You Can Tell You're Reading An Amy Fortuna Story

Jan. 20th, 2006 | 01:00 am
mood: amusedamused

1. It's about dying, especially in pursuit of forbidden love. I have a lot of stories that do that.

2. It involves an unreliable narrator. Oh, how I love my unreliable narrators.

3. The title is taken from whatever song I was listening to at the time, although almost none of the fics I've written were songfics in the specific sense.

4. The sex is kind of vague, if it happens at all. (That would be due to me being a big ol' virgin when I wrote most of what I wrote.)

5. It's written in first person POV, or third person limited. I do love getting inside their heads.

6. It's short, generally under 2000 words.

7. It involves angst and unrequited love.

8. When it's a happy story, the narrator waxes almost lyrical about his or her beloved, and the lover does pretty much the same back. Then there is sex and/or kissing.

9. The title of the fic is usually a phrase that is in the story itself, generally reflecting the main theme.

10. Did I mention the part where it's about death? Yeah.

5 characters I love above all others

Nov. 15th, 2005 | 12:08 am
mood: thoughtfulthoughtful

1. Methos. Because he's ever so cute, ever so snarky, and has that thing he does when his neck encounters the blades of swords. He's graceful too, the way his body moves, fluid motion with a sword in his hand. He can be Death, and scary as hell, but also be the Really Old Guy relaxing with a beer. He's as old as the hills, but as young as yesterday, and melds in all together into one perfect body.

2. Faramir. "I would not take this thing if it lay by the highway...not if Minas Tirith were falling in ruin and I alone could save her, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory...." Oh. This is why I love this man. Noble as hell and sticks to it. Has the chance to ruin everything and doesn't. Bookish warrior. "I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. " I think a lot of what he says we would do well to remember in our own time.

3. The Doctor, especially Nine. Because this man, like Methos, is old and young. Because there is snark and fun, and witticisms in the face of great peril. He saves the world a thousand times, holds hands with a girl, kisses a boy. Because the 13-part series wrung every last ounce of emotion out of me, from joy to deep sorrow and everywhere in between.

4. Arwen. I have always loved Arwen because she's not a warrior maiden. Because I'm not. She gave up so much for love, and walked into it knowing that one day it would hurt beyond imagination to say goodbye. Because she's noble and gracious and good. Yes, she was a small character in LOTR, but it wasn't about her, and her own story is still there, not detracted from one whit by it not being the central theme. She, unlike Eowyn, got through to my unathletic self and showed me that you don't have to be the warrior-maid going off on a suicidal mission to win love. She won her love by being herself and doing her thing, and I think that should be praised.

5. Harry Potter. Of all of these, the character I most identify with. Born in my birth year, with real human flaws and deep faults, yet ultimately lovable. He never gets too noble, too faraway. At heart, he's just a human boy, and he lusts, loves, fights, fears, hopes, and dreams. We see his fantastic world through his eyes, and hate him or love him, we feel what he does, who he is.

Jeeves/Wooster squee

Nov. 13th, 2005 | 11:12 pm
mood: creativecreative
music: Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway - Beautiful Disaster

Recently, we acquired the Fry and Laurie collection of Jeeves and Wooster and we have been working our way through it.

I think I have probably completely destroyed my husband's childhood, because all he has to do is take a look at my face at certain moments and know /exactly/ what I am thinking.

I. Just. They. Have. So. Much. SUBTEXT!

In addition, this twosome, for some reason, has the ability to absolutely melt me. They are just so cute, and so /good/ together, and soinlove, and any relationship like that is forbidden on so many levels.

And Stephen Fry is pure erotica in shirtsleeves and apron. I honestly don't know quite what it is, but the sight of Jeeves polishing silver or cooking or engaging in any sort of domestic duty that involves taking off one's jacket, sends shivers of absolute sheer slashgirl lust through me I haven't had since I first watched Highlander and the constant dance of lust/love that Duncan and Methos seemed to continually be doing.

We've just finished series 3, so only one more to go. *sigh* I want to write smut in this fandom, because by god it needs it desperately. I think I've already read every piece of Jeeves/Wooster containing sex.

I want to write all the slash cliches for these two, because every pairing with as much sizzle as this one needs a locked-in-the-closet story, a Pon Farr story, a hurt/comfort story, a cast-out-by-society story, a growing-old-together fic, and more.

I want to write about Bertie being sick and Jeeves wiping his fevered brow and confessing his love when he thinks Bertie's asleep. I want fic about them caught in a compromising position and Jeeves winning the day with a clever explanation. I want desperate sex in dangerous places, as well the comfort and quiet of just being together in a safe place, with no interfering aunts. I want lust exploding suddenly in both of them, I want to watch beautifully controlled Jeeves completely given over to it. I want quiet confessions of love. I want angst and happiness.

I have to write again, so I can write this pairing.

I will be doing this with the prompt of "Nano". Should be interesting.

Definition of "nano" is "a prefix meaning one billionth", but I think I will take a more general view and used the common usage meaning of "very, very small".

Some words I could use include:

Nanosecond, nanotech, nanometer, the iPod Nano, nanocompetition, and just the general use of 'nano' meaning something very small.

I'm not going to stick to an OTP or even one fandom, this is going to be multi-universe. I'll be writing in Buffy, Doctor Who (Ninth Doctor), Firefly, and other fandoms as they come to me.
